Top Tips from a second-year student to Freshers

Top Tips from a second-year student to Freshers

Tip 1: Take every opportunity given to you!

  • The freshers fair at Uni provides plenty of opportunities to sign up for free trials for societies and sports teams.
  • Societies provide the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded individuals.
  • Do not worry about having experience in any sports societies you join, as they are always open to welcoming beginners!
  • Utilise the 1:1 academic tutorials provided in first year. Opportunity to ask questions that you may not have felt comfortable asking during class. Your PATs are there to help you!

Tip 2: You are not the only one experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions at freshers.

  • The first few months of university can be a nerve-racking time, but I can guarantee that everybody is feeling the exact same! Be confident, and do not be afraid to speak to new people as they are probably just as nervous as you are.

Tip 3: Money Management.

  • Don't feel pressured to go out every day at freshers as there are plenty of other opportunities to make friends. Through your course or non-drinking socials with societies or sports teams!
  • Plan your meals ahead of time each week! Bulk cook and reheat; however, be aware that hall kitchens' storage is limited.
  • Don't get conned into the TV licence letters! It is only necessary if you are actually watching TV!
  • Shopping at ALDI is a must if you want to make your loan last all year!

Tip 4: Be yourself!

  • Don't change to fit in with the people you initially meet in freshers!
  • Only take part in activities you feel comfortable doing!
  • Don't feel pressured into drinking, and know your limits!
  • If you choose not to take part in something don't worry, this won't affect your opportunities to make friends.
